Honda is recalling over 176,000 Civic sedans and hatchbacks from the 2022 through 2024 model years because a faulty part of their power steering systems could cause tire damage. All recalled vehicles already had their power steering racks replaced, but the replacement part was improperly calibrated at the factory.

Thank you for the heads up. I’m currently waiting on the gear box to come in.

hmmm. i wonder how it could cause tire damage. if it's just a calibration issue, couldn't they just do one of the over-the-air updates?

Keep in mind, I believe we are seeing two different issues. Sticky steering, and wrong tooth count, which would cause wheels to rub and ultimately oversteering damage. I got a call from my dealer about the recall and they inspected and found no issues. HOWEVER, I did inform them that I have a sticky steering wheel while driving in a straight line. They wheren't able to help me without the technician experiencing the issue first hand. Even though I had their TSB in hand. I'm sure I'm going to have to put up a fight in the dealer to replace the gearbox (not the steering rack).

damn, that's not very comforting. that's why i got rid of my Toyota. I had warranty issues that they refused to fix.

Having the same sticky steering issue at highway speeds on my 2023 Civic Si (just slightly over 5K in miles) just recently the last two days. Brought it to my Honda Dealership and they found a faulty steering gearbox. It’ll be covered under warranty and repaired per the Service Bulletin. Steering Gearbox is on backorder until 4 Dec, but Honda will be covering the rental vehicle charge.

That’s crazy yours happened so early. They also said mine was the gear box and have been waiting.

Yeah mine is getting the gear box replaced.

I’m assuming faulty build with some of the 23’s from the Ontario factory. I had an axel leak literally at 800 miles on the engine that had a crappy axel seal. Starting to think my car might be a lemon, lol. However, I still love this car, even with all the manufacturer related issues. I still believe this will be a solid long term car.

I’m sure it will be, just a few bumps in the road. Such a clean looking car to have.

On my 2022 SI the colder the weather gets the worse the sticky steering gets. No sticking at all throughout the warm/hot/nearly unbearable Alabama Spring, Summer and early Fall. But when it gets truly cold the sticking is back. That's been my experience so far.

it probably might just need to warm up. have you tried driving in circles to try and warm up the mechanism? Not sure it's a practical solution but might help diagnose why this is happening. maybe the grease is too thick or tolerances are off. it sounds like this happens in cold weather driving in straight lines so maybe the motor or gears are not warm enough.

It seems you didn't understand what I was saying.

What I was pointing out was that in cold weather the steering system of my Honda SI does the sticking thing. In warm or hot weather the steering does not do the sticking thing. This difference should tell you that the steering system is affected by temperature. My worst experiences with the sticking phenomenon is on cold days when I've been highway driving for a couple of hours. I have a 3 hour highway commute that I drive about eight times a month between Huntsville AL and Atlanta GA.

i read on some other forums that replacing their battery and cleaning their ground connections fixed the issue. i guess their battery wasn't producing enough voltage in cold weather and the EPS motor was struggling.
I don’t think that’s it. I first noticed mine doing it while it was hot outside, and is happening more frequently.

Quick update, looks like there are still manufacturer delays with parts. My vehicle still hasn’t been fixed and the Honda dealership now says Dec 21 for the steering gearbox estimated release date. ☹

I called Monday about mine as well. Was told Honda gets part as of then the 14th and maybe they’ll get it that week. Fingers crossed, the pulling is annoying.
