No Factory option for wireless Apple CarPlay?

Hello everyone,

Let me just start by saying I’m not familiar with this platform as this information I’m using for my girlfriends car.

She purchased a 2024 Honda Civic Sport Sedan. From our understanding Apple car play only works via the usb input under the AC controls.

I’ve seen videos online where others connect through Bluetooth. The HU in her car looks just like the one in the video except she doesn’t have the touch function near the dial only the analog ones at the bottom. I don’t have her car around long enough to mess with settings and at the risk of bricking her unit.

My question is, is it possible to get Apple car play without using those 3rd party adapters? She will lose that spot for a simple USB charging if we go the adapter route. I prefer having OEM looks on the car, so trying to avoid that brick that will forever be connected there. Do these head units work like a BMW one where you can just code it to add wireless apple car play that was disabled from factory? Or maybe it only needs a wifi antenna added to get to work? Or would the head unit have to be replaced with one that allows for wireless Apple CarPlay? Or a 3rd party wireless adapter that can be plugged in behind the dash and keep the USB plug available for simple phone charging

I’m just shocked that in 2024 the civic sport wouldn’t have the wireless option. My 17’ M3 comes with wireless car play and some older ones can just simply be coded in… or worst case swap the HU to a larger one that allows it.

Unfortunately for the LX, Sport, EX, it's only wired CarPlay. Only the top spec Touring gets wireless. So far, no one has tried to swap the stock seven-inch screen to the nine-inch found on the Touring.
SI and Type R also get it.

I have a Motorolla MA1 for wireless Android Auto and have an Anker USB car charger

I have that Motorola device in my Pilot and it works great. There are similar Car Play devices out there, though I cannot speak on any of them.

There are also aftermarket head units that allow wireless and a ton of other features. Probably cheaper and definitely easier than trying to get the 9" display to work.

you can look into this, but it's pricey $202 plus shipping from the Philippines

From what I gather, it's not a direct fit. You need to do some trimming since the OEM parts of the kit are from the Asian market. I ended up getting something like this....

CarQiWireless Wireless Charger for Honda Civic 2022-2024, USB Type A, Compatible with iPhone and Android Phones, Anti-Slip Silicon Mat, Fast Charging 7.5W/10W https://a.co/d/4CzS0Qq

It was a gift, so I don't have the exact link.

I was against it at first and wanted OEM. But I hear a lot of complaints about the OEM charging pad. This add-in charger doesn't rattle and fit my larger Pixel 6 Pro, which wouldn't work with the OEM charger. Also has an additional USB port.

I bought a third-party wireless adapter (for Android Auto, in my case) and a separate wireless charging pad designed for the 11th gen Civic, per this thread. However the wireless adapter made the UI laggier. Also, wireless charging is a compromise compared to wired charging (even from the factory) since it's less efficient and produces heat as a waste product, reducing charging speed and (potentially) battery life.

In the end I got this magnetic USB C adapter with a 90-degree angle. Presumably there's a Lightning equivalent, if needed. The magnetic adapter allows quick connect/disconnect that's almost as convenient as wireless, assuming you always put your phone in the dash cubby (rather than leaving it in your pocket or purse).

The 90-degree angle allows the phone to fit in the cubby without setting it diagonally to accommodate the USB cable sticking out. You don't have to center your phone in the cubby, so it leaves more space. Plus, I think Honda's non-charging cubby is bigger anyway.

So far, I prefer this simple quick-disconnect wired setup to wireless charging and AA/ACP. I think I'd even rather have it than the factory wireless setup.

Caveat: The tiny phone adapter part is best to leave attached to your phone all the time. It doesn't affect the phone's ability to sit upright in my particular home wireless charging stand (which has a cooling fan, btw).
