I was out driving today and decided to dig into this.
  • Temperature was 18F. Sunny weather. Salt-coated highways with some patches of melting snow.
  • I tried the "spray" method to clean after I ensured the wipers were clear of ice. The system failed because large swaths of the windshield weren't touched by the wiper blade.
  • Had lunch in the car, and I used a napkin to clean the blades after putting them into service position. This resolved the problem for a while.
  • After 15 minutes of driving, road salt caused me to clean the windshield again. This time, the old problem was back.
  • About 30 minutes later - I filled the gas tank and "cleaned" the blades again. This didn't work as well as the first time.
  • Didn't matter if I was stopped or going 70mph - wipers failed to stay "connected" to the windshield.
  • I went to Auto Zone to pick up some washer fluid. I studied the blade assembly carefully - it's a routine slim top connector.
  • I haven't measured the blade, but I think a good replacement with a Bosch (or your favorite brand) will fit fine. The hoses for the spray are not part of the wiper assembly.
Next up - buy a pair and see if they improve things.

Thanks for posting that is really good information. I am not sure what is causing the wipers to bend upwards like that and not contact the glass, that is very odd. When I tested mine in frigid temps there was lots of tension and play on the wiper blade bouncing it up and down. Something must cause it to lift up and not return to the glass properly , like the tension reduces ?

There are no other blades for the 22 civic yet. We will just have to wait I guess.
Do we need special blades or something? I am very used to just getting Bosch wipers with the universal arm adapters and usually just using the J-shaped one (whatever that's called)

The OEM blades are listed as 600mm and 475mm long for the windshield, and the manual shows them coming off with the fairly standard lock tab; would 24" and 18" Bosch blades not work? (For some reason no info is given for the rear wiper on the hatchback, but I suppose I could just go measure its length with a tape measure)

My passenger wiper is lifting off the glass today. I tried to get it back down to the proper position to touch the glass but it is being stubborn. This just happened today, it is pretty cold out and we have a bit storm rolling through. The only issue is when I try to spray wiper fluid and the passenger wiper skips over a section of the windshield and the fluid doesn't wipe clean, it remains on the glass as a puddle. I'm headed to the parts store to get a different wiper, we need a 19 inch wiper for the passenger side. My driver side seems fine. I have a highway trip tomorrow and I can't wait for a dealer to check it and have them keep my car for a day, lol. I'm putting on a new wiper on my own, will see if that solves the problem.

So I picked up a Bosch Icon wiper for my passenger side. The factory driver side wiper does not give me any issue and it seems to stay flat against the windshield. It is the shape of the passenger side wiper that causes it to lift with a curvature, maybe it has too much flex pressure for a shorter size so it lifts in the middle. The passenger side wiper is 19 inch and the driver side is 24 inch.

I installed the Bosch icon wiper OE size, 19 inch.

Note: The clip that comes with the wiper does not fit out of the box. I had to modify the clip by cutting off the side wings on the end of the clip. It wasn't pretty but I got it trimmed up and it fits fine now. The Bosch clip has two side wings on the end of it, and the wings are too wide to slide into the Honda wiper arm fully, preventing the wiper from sliding all the way down into place. I trimmed up the two end wings (maybe a bit too much) but it fits and is sturdy enough. First test run with the Bosch wiper indicates that it works well, it does not lift off the glass like the factory wiper, and it is cleaning the windshield 100%. It makes full contact with the glass. I was in a rush to get this done as I have a long highway trip tomorrow. I will bring the Honda wiper with me in case the modified Bosch flies off, lol. But it seems sturdy enough. The cleaning wipe is perfect, I will be testing it out over the next day's highway trip.
We shouldn't have to do this but I don't want to keep using a bad wiper that doesn't work properly.

Thanks, @Zeroptzero !! All we need is a wiper adaptor that fits the '22 Civic.
Yeah the one the clip that comes with the Bosch Icon OE is very close, it just has these two wide wings on the end of it which need trimming. It is relatively easy with the right tool, It is secure though, with no issues with it being loose.

So I got my passenger wiper working fine with the Bosch Icon 19 inch OE. After test running through some snow and rain and ice I noticed the passenger side was cleaning better than the driver side (Honda factory wiper), so I went out and got a 24 inch Bosch Icon OE for the driver side. So I have two new wipers now.

I spent a bit more time modifying the clips that come with the Bosch Icons OE and I got them to fit properly. It is a relatively simple modification. Bosch gives you a clip that is very close to the Honda clip, it just has two side wings that are too wide, so you simply trim them back by cutting off the wings, to allow the clip to work. Give it a firm push and it clips right in. Too bad the Honda clips don't fit the Bosch wipers or it would be a simple swap, they could probably be modified to fit if I had enough time to explore them, but the Bosch clips are pretty close. These are the Bosch OE wipers, as they have a couple different models. Until we find alternate clips this should work fine. I will have four hours of highway driving tomorrow to test them out in snowy conditions.

Awesome!! Thank you for the helpful information. I’ll give these Bosch blades a try.

Sure. Make sure you get the OE version of the wipers. If you need advice on trimming the clip let me know.

Comparing the Honda wiper to the aftermarket one it appears that the Honda wiper has too much tension and an increased amount of curvature, that tension may push up the wiper arm enough to prevent full contact with the glass. The aftermarket wiper does not seem to have as much tension on it, and less of a curve.

Very much appreciated. Thanks for looking into this with such detail. I’ll let you know if I run into any issues.

Can confirm that my wipers also leave untouched sections on my windshield. The wiper doesn't touch the glass on these areas. Pretty frustrating, hoping that Bosch releases some wipers compatible w/ the new civic

Is it mostly the passenger side wiper ? My passenger side was the problem and when I look at the removed part it is clear that the wiper is heavily curved and probably under too much tension so the wiper arm doesn't have enough tension to keep it down. My driver side wiper doesn't seem bad.

Subaru uses the same wipers and attachment method as our Honda wipers, and I am told you can buy clips from Subaru for their wipers (an oil change place gave me some free wipers for my Subaru but they need clips to work). I should check with the Subaru parts guys and see if the can get clips.

I did a four hour highway trip yesterday through constant slush and ice and road mist and the Bosch Icon OE 19 inch passenger side wiper did not exhibit any issues. The Bosch wiper fits and it looks exactly the same as the Honda shape , they give you a clip but it just needs a small bit of modifying to cut off some plastic on the sides of the clip and then it fits. There is no official listing of wiper parts that are meant for our cars but I can get the Bosch to fit. I will ask my Subaru parts guy next.

It was the passenger side for ~6 weeks so I didn't pay too much attention to it. However yesterday, it started on the driver side so I'm taking action now. I emailed my dealership also to see if this is something that the warranty can fix but I also don't feel like leaving my car there for an entire day.

I read your post earlier about modifying it, but hesitated because I don't want to accidently break the wiper or have the wiper come off later down the road. Is it really a perfect fit after cutting of the clip thing?

It is a perfect fit for the most part, the clip that comes with the wiper just has thes two wings at the end of it which prevents it from sliding down far enough. Once the wings are clipped it slides further down and the square locking button pops into place. I understand any hesitancy to mess with something like this but I wanted some immediate action to fix the issue as I do a lot of highway driving.

Any warranty fix would be to give you the exact same wiper and after they keep your car for a day or more, and the issue is intermittent which is always hard to repeat itself when you want it to. The wiper blade has too much tension and I don't know if that tension gets worse in cold temps, I suspect it does. I thought of bending the blade 180 degrees to lower the tension but I wasn't sure if that could damage the blade, so I bit the bullet and bought the Bosch wiper. There is now way the new wiper will ever come loose but it needs a slight mod to get it to slide into place, once in there it is fully locked. This is on my passenger side wiper, I can't say if the driver side wiper works better or worse, I only had issues with the passenger side.

I think I'll try the Bosch. How did you cut the wings?
You mean these ones right?

Well the Bosch Icon OE comes with several clips, there is one that looks very much like our Honda oem clip, but it has these wider portions at the end that prevents the clip from sliding all the way into the slot. I call them wings, you just need to snip them off so the clip then slides further into the slot and it can lock into place with the square locking peg.

It is just plastic, so you can use a cutting tool, or a pair of snips, or a small hand saw, just zip off the wider ends on both side of the one clip as flush as you can get them. I have one that I clipped already as a spare but I can't show the wings that I clipped off as they are gone.

You need the OE Bosch Icons, 19 inch for the passenger side if that is the problem side, they come with alternate clips (three different ones I believe and one looks like our factory clip with the square locking tab. The non OE version of the Bosch wipers has the wrong clip and no spares to swap out. I am not sure of that picture above it could be one of the alternate clips that come with the OE wiper kit ?. You pull off the clip with a flat head screw driver and then mount the proper alternate clip in place of it once you modify the alternate clip.

I'm glad to help or give advice.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Yeah I think I'll get both the passenger and driver wipers. A shame that they're a bit expensive though but it is what it is.
