Windshield Washer Spray?

5451 Views 23 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  Burt
Just got a brand new 11th Gen Civic Hatch. Not sure if this is by design but when I use the "Spray" function to clean my windshield. Nothing acctually sprays onto the windshield but instead it sprays directly above the wipers then the wipers move the water across the windshield a few times. Again, not sure if this is a new 2022 thing or if I should bring it to my dealer. The rear works fine and the tank is topped off and I can see (the nozzles does spray strong right above the wiper blades) and hear the pump working.

Thanks!

For 11th gens the sprayers are located on the wiper arms.

Correct. So does that mean it's no longer the old school spray all over. Now it's spray here and the wipers move the water?
It's the way it is supposed to work and it's lame.
that is the design yes, you need to flood the windshield a bit more than usual so it spreads across while wiping. A number of manufacturers are using this design, my Subaru had it 3 years ago.
The washer spray and wiper functionality is honestly the only thing I hate about the car.

Not to mention the reservoir tank is really small. It seems like I’ve only used the spray a couple handful of times and I had to fill it up. It only took about 1/3 of a gallon to fill it up haha wat!?

^ I don't mean to rub it in but Canadian cars always get bigger washer reservoirs :) I'm positive I can put a full jug of wiper fluid into my reservoir. :)

Canadian here. The reservoir takes exactly 1 jug of washer fluid.
(I’ve filled mine twice now)

Sounds about right, I am sure some US models get a smaller reservoir , quite common with other Honda models that equip Canadian vehicles with larger reservoirs to assist with winter conditions.
I have no issues with it…. Not sure why people are complaining?

Used it for the first time today... it's a little weird. Guess I'll get used to it over time, though.

People are complaining because the wipers only spray on the up stroke. Then it's dry going down and that just smears stuff all over.
Is there a technique to use? It doesn't seem like the passenger side is getting water. But the left edge of the windshield is soaking wet.

Honda engineers fixing a problem that doesn’t exist. Also the fact that I can’t lift up the wipers without scratching the hood edge. Aggravating.
As far as lifting the wipers, if the car is switched off, you can rotate them freely (in the direction they move when you operate them with the switch lever). Then once they are on the windshield, you can lift them without the arm touching the hood.

Read the manual and put the wipers in maintenance mode.
They tuck away under the curve of the hood by default for aerodynamic purposes.

That's probably not good for them, put them in maintenance mode.

I shouldn’t have to put anything into any freakin mode to lift the damn wipers. Stupid overthinking shit design.

If someone finds a fix for this.... I have been toying with the idea of ordering two spray nozzles from Honda, and installing them on the lower side of the blades. So when you use the washer, it sprays above and below the blade, and then there's water on the windshield on the downstroke. Just did a 2600 mile road trip. Lots of bugs. Praying for rain the whole time just to get the bugs off the windshield. These wipers/washers are lame!

I can't agree more. It uses a lot more washer fluid too. After I got the washer low warning light the first time, I put in half jar of the fluid because I want to purge out the one from the dealership. After a couple of sprays, the light came up again. I was on a 600KM trip. I filled in another 1//4 of the jar and the light came on after a couple of sprays too. With any other cars, 1/4 jar can do many sprays and last for a long time. I thought there was a leak in the reservoir. I brought it to the dealership after I got home. They checked it out and found no leak. I could not believe it. They showed me underneath of my car. It was dry. They asked me to monitor the situation.

After a while, I realize that it pumps out so much fluid from the tank for each spray and there is no leak in the tank indeed. It just uses a lot more of washer but not doing a better job.
