Well, that didn't last long.

Wednesday September 10th 6:40am, I'm driving to work, 4-5 minutes away from the office. Since getting the Civic hybrid I've been taking a route where the speed limit is 35-50mph, costs me a few minutes in the commute versus the highway but really maximizes the fuel economy -and safer, I think (less crazies than on the highway). Overcast but not wet, under 70F, great weather for high mpg.

I'm approaching an intersection I've been through every day, see a Ford Escape coming the other way looking to turn left but several car lengths back as I'm about to enter the intersection going straight through. Light just turned yellow as I got within a couple car lengths of the intersection, way too close to stop from 40mph but plenty of time to get through on the yellow. I'm in the intersection & expect the Escape (now a couple car lengths back) to yield the right of way & do the turn behind me, plenty of time for both of us as far as I'm concerned.

Except it doesn't. The driver is probably seeing the yellow light more than my "Smurf blue" Civic & tries to beat the light cutting the corner ahead of me, and there's no time but for a hard jab on the brakes to lessen the inevitable.

The Civic, purchased brand new just 7 months & <7,000 miles before, did its final job, a testament to its excellent engineering: I was protected & walked away. I verified at the ER nothing was broken & didn't hit my head, though I've got quite a collection of bruises, abrasions & soreness. Never had an accident before that caused an airbag deploy. The other driver walked away too, had to comfort her that it would be okay (I really thought she would have a medical emergency roadside). It was helpful that she kept repeating "I think it was all my fault!" and the police seemed to agree, as our cars were being towed she left with a couple citations & I left with none of that.

Insurance says it's totaled. It was a good if all too brief run. I expected that being a Honda it would be a good car but even I was surprised at how engaging it was even to a former "save the manuals!" muscle car driver. It's the first car I've owned that BEAT its EPA ratings when I drove it easy, and was still well over 40 mpg in the early spring months or when I was spending more time than usual in Sport mode (what can I say, that electric motor instant full torque is addictive) - my calculated value since cold February is 46.3 mpg, the car read a bit higher as 48.9 mpg.

I don't have a settlement amount yet but it should be substantial given the age & that I only had to finance about $6k. When I get that, I will want to be getting the same exact thing again - Sport Touring hybrid hatchback in Boost Blue. Maybe the dealership for the first one will give me a discount as a repeat customer helping their bottom line twice in the same year (they also short-changed me by a few thousand on my Camaro SS trade-in, perhaps they can be convinced to part with a thousand or two on that basis for a good testimonial on them).

Wish me luck, and stay safe out there. Will be rejoining the Civic crowd soon.

So basically the Escape was going to turn left but wanted to beat the yellow light from turning red and drove right into you as you went through the intersection? How stupid does a person need to be and where the heck was she looking? Definitely not in front or where she was turning into. She must have been booking it considering the damage and airbag deployment.

Sorry for what happened and I commend you for staying calm, I wouldn't have.

glad you are okay. we can see here the benefit of newer corner impact standards. i had a 12 Fit where the corner crash structure was basically just a piece of plastic. cases like this are why i replaced that car, finally, despite loving it and paying virtually nothing to own it (deprecation was only $800/year). safety first!

you want that to be totaled - just get a new one. a new car like that has so many valuable parts, and without it being an older car with sentimental value, taking it apart is the best solution.

Agreed on wanting it totaled after that. Other than the windshield being cracked and what the airbag deploy did inside, everything aft of the firewall that can be unbolted from the frame is in really good shape. One wheel (at the driver's side front where the impact was) had some scuffing but the rest were fine, and the battery was far away from the impact. Lots of good stuff to keep other Civics on the road after (God forbid) some lesser accidents later on.

Gotta stay calm in most situations

Quick story - Some lady pulled out and totaled my hrv (her fault) and she was hysterical …”omg how can you do this?” “My beautiful car” crying and crying….turned out this was her 2nd accident within a couple months…all her coworkers showed up to comfort her…it was crazy ….i was just sitting on the sidewalk mean mugging these bitches waiting for the police

True enough, but I suppose having the police pretty quickly come to the conclusion on scene that the left turning driver was at fault for failing to yield as I had the right of way probably makes that sort of fight harder to sustain.

Was your accident at a multi lane each way intersection? That's the only way I can see that argument making sense even if it were true, and i could see a lane change being perfectly reasonable as a response (caused by the other driver's foolish turn) as an attempt at an evasive maneuver. In my case it was one lane each way so no way to argue that against me, but I'm sure there are those always looking for an angle to get out of responsibility.

I’m so sorry for your loss man. Thats an amazing piece of machine you have and it sucks when its just taken from you. Atleast you are safe and sound! I also just got into an accident a week ago where a truck driver tried doing a u-turn from the right lane right infront of me and ran off after. Couldnt get his plate but atleast my car is still driveable. Sucks man :/

Our 2025 Touring Hybrid, with 6k miles was a in an accident about a month ago. Should hear any day now if its totaled. Hopefully the insurance offer is reasonable. Almost identical cars are listed on Carvana for 31k or more. If not a problem please let me know the $$$ amount of your offer and I'll do the same. Thks! (PS. Assuming it is totaled I too will be buying almost the same exact car except it will be a 2026 instead of a 2025)
