Oil change in light of free maintenance from Honda

Hello,

My 2023 civic ex purchase came with free oil change for two years, every 7,500 miles. Since the dealer offers this every 7,500 miles, I have in mind doing my own oil change at 5,000 miles (due to what many have recommended) but going once again for dealer’s oil change at the 7,500 miles. Can anyone share how they navigate their oil changes in light of the free maintenance that the dealer offers for two years? Do you all do your own at 5,000 miles and get another free one from dealer at 7,500?
I plan to buy Kirkland 0w20 oil and Honda engine oil filter and find a mechanic to charge me labor. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

thank you!

I personally do my own oil changes. I bought my new 07' Si Sedan. Years ago now I started doing myself around 100K when I saw Honda dealership wasn't using correct socket (6 point) and the oil bolt started becoming rounded. That oil change is a pain due to oil filter location on the bottom back side of the K20 motor near Axel / CV Boot. Years later I found a Honda Tool called an Oil Deflection Tool that makes the job easier instead of getting the oil bath... However it's pretty pain free on my new 22' Si once you jack it up properly. It's not hard to do. Just use the amount of oil indicated in the user's manual and check it... I personally do both filter and oil at 5K intervals on the new 22' esp. with the Turbo and wanting the car to long as it's older brother but that might not be the reality (07' Si just turned 272K with no engine or transmission issues.)

Keep in mind that MOST auto parts stores will take your used oil and filters.
  1. O'Reilly (Can be hit and miss if their oil drum is full)
  2. AutoZone (Can be hit and miss if their oil drum is full)
  3. Firestone Complete Auto Care (I like roll up to a open bay, no problem and they take it)
I do my own oil for 3 reasons:
  1. I know it gets done right. (Techs. making minimum wage are doing the job not a master / senior mechanic in most cases)
Just remember that NO ONE cares about YOUR CAR as much as YOU DO.
  2. I am not getting sold unneeded money making services from dealership.
  3. I save a little money in the process for bigger repairs I am not able to do.
Valvoline 0/20 GF6 oil is around $30 at Wal-Mart for 5 Quarts and Honda OEM Filters can be found on Amazon.com for around $7 to $8 in multi-packs.
New oil plug crush washers aren't too expensive either.
If you are willing to learn / DYI. The process isn't hard. With a few tools and watches on YouTube you also can do it successfully...
Also keep in mind that if it's in the User's Manual for the User to do, it's really not that difficult YOU CAN DO IT.
Always refer to your User's / Service Manual from the Manufacturer on Servicing. That way you AVOID being sold unneeded services.
