Hi all,

early this year, I purchased two 2022 Civic Sports. On one of the cars, the driver’s side B Pilar looked warped and when I brought it to the dealership, they said it was not covered under Hondas warranty. I called Honda and they said it was due to environmental factors. The hottest it got in my area is high 80s and the car is parked in a garage or in a shaded area where my daughter parks at school.

5,500 miles and Honda will not cover this.
We have owned over 10 Hondas in our family and will not bother purchasing another bc they are so petty of $500 and did not care to even consider the loyalty I have placed into their company.

Sorry for the long rant but a melted B Pilar? Really Honda?

Was it this way when you picked the car up? If it was this way when you picked the car up, it would be one thing. If it happened while at your daughter's school, that would be something else.

Paint and imperfections could and should be addressed by Honda or the dealership. If it is anything that could have happened after it left the factory, Honda is not going to want to address it. If it is something that could have happened after it left the dealership, nobody is going to want to address it.

I'm sure you would have seen this at time of purchase, so it must have happened after.

It looks like some sort of focused sunlight or heat caused that. Probably by something you parked near (or vandalism). It's not Hondas fault at that point. No plastic can withstand focused sunlight and auto plastic doesn't just deform for no reason. All you can do is ask the dealer to order you the part and replace it.

Clearly, the most logical explanation is not sufficient.

where my daughter parks at school.
I hate to be the one to tell you this, but that's a burn from sunlight focused through the bowl of a glass meth pipe. It would appear your daughter is smoking meth while driving. This is known to be bad for the car.

Did you have the windows tinted? Looks like you possibly did judging from the reflection in the rear window. If so, isn't it possible that the heat gun that window tinter's often use caused the damage?
No, not tinted and always parked in a shaded area.

Noticed it right at 5,000 miles. Since Honda sent out a 2018 memo to dealerships, you’re right, they won’t fix it under warranty. Thanks for the reply

Then that's on you. And what? What 2018 memo addresses a new model year car? Ultimately, car plastic doesn't just warp and melt without an external force. If it wasn't like that when you bought it, and it's not hot in your area, then something caused it. Maybe your kid that doesn't want to get in trouble?

Honda is not to blame. File an insurance claim, or buy the part to replace. It's just a plastic trim piece...

I have had the sun reflect off a building, with reflective glass on a warm day, that was so hot, that it hurt and I had to move away from that spot.

I don't think it is unconceivable that a side mirror (or other reflective source) from a car next to yours or building could have produced enough heat to warp that plastic.

Thanks. Yeah, maybe I’ll have all the trim wrapped the same color white as the car to prevent it from absorbing any heat.

I was also recently reminded about the London "Walkie-Talkie" building: 'Walkie-Talkie' skyscraper melts Jaguar car parts

The upshot of this is that the curve of the exterior glass on that building worked as a magnifying glass (or convex mirror), focusing the sunlight and melting parts of that person's car.

I still feel like this seems more like an environmental issue, rather than a defect from Honda. However, it is possible that it was damaged in transit and someone at the dealer tried one of those cheap plastic repairs that wear off after some time...

Related, there is a known issue with certain aftermarket windscreens on a model of motorcycle that I own, where theb differently shaped windscreen acts as a magnifying glass, and the sun's rays amplified by the windshield melt the dashboard of the bike.

I agree this is most likely a case of Civic = ant and some kid was stomping around with a magnifying glass.
