Is K&N Engine Air Filter good for our cars?

I was thinking of putting a K&N engine air filter inside my stock intake box. I heard these allow more contaminants to go into the engine, though. I was wondering if our cars would be fine with them

I put them in my last 3 cars and my '24 Civic Touring. They work great. I have driven 100's of thousands of miles with no issues. Make sure they are not over oiled and keep the MAF clean. I have the PRL version with 12,000 to sell if you are interested, basically the same thing. I got it as part of a deal with the PRL intake tube, but already had the K&N. PM me if you want to work out a price.

More trouble than they're worth. For decades I've had an annual routine I do Thanksgiving weekend: 1) new mid-price air filter, whether old one is dirty or not, 2) new wiper blades, 3) thorough interior cleaning incl carpet shampoo, 4) clean battery terminals.

depending on your engine, yes they can make a big difference.

i had a honda fit, and immediately on putting it in the engine breathed better, there was a noticeably easier ramp up in vehicle rpms under acceleration.

but here is the thing. all engines will breathe better if there is no filter. you, if you wear a covid kn95 mask, can breathe ok but probably don't love to exercise with it on. the air filter is there for a reason: the more particles it lets thru, the more potential wear on the engine. now, every filter is going to be lightyears better than having none. the bigger bits like stones and sand etc, that's the important thing to catch.

i will say pro tip, after cleaning your kandn or prl (i prefer prl), dry it thoroughly. i thought mine was dry and stuck it back in, only to have the engine itself vacuum the rest of the water out. i immediately got a bunch of banging and CEL, thought i had killed the MAF sensor, but replacing it only seemed to help a little and the engine never ran as well again after. for the life of me i cannot imagine what else i could damage that would not also cause more severe problems, but that was my fun experience. dry for several days or in front of a dehumidifier.

So, from the factory I say it's fine to drop in and go. Subsequent cleaning and re-oiling (around 40,000 miles) I use a shop vac with a piece of old t-shirt (white cotton rag, basically) to suck through on both sides. When there is no more residue pulled through it sits for a day before I put it back in. Just for GPs I pull and spray the MAF with some electronics spray. Never in 100's of thousands of miles have I had an issue with gas mileage or oil use.
