TFL put together an interesting video where they try out traction aids like tire blocks, tire chains, and tire socks to try and make a Civic hatchback as good in the snow as a Grand Cherokee.

The verdicts:
  • Tire blocks: not bad for getting unstuck but awful at speed.
  • Tire chains: Hard to install with lower profile wheels but lots of grip.
  • Tire socks: easier to install than chains (2 person job), comparable traction to chains
  • Snow tires are still the best option.
