Joined to validate other owners experiences with sticky/notchy steering when driving straight at highway speeds. I only have 2.5k miles on my Civic Sport. It’s very disconcerting. I took it to the local dealer this morning, and they informed me that since they changed hands, all the master techs quit. The service advisor recommended brining it back next year SMH. I have logged a complaint with the NHTSA, and saw there were already 15 other drivers with logged files describing the exact same issue. For now, I’m going to avoid highway travel at all possible. It’s not enjoyable, and potentially dangerous. I can’t believe this is happening with a Honda. I couldn’t in good conscience recommend the brand any longer.
Tell the dealer it is a defective steering rack. Our local dealer didn't hesitate, gave us a loaner till the part comes in and the repairs are made.

I've been driving a POS kia forte loaner since Nov 28th. Rack is on backorder with no ETA for delivery.

I'm concerned that this problem will resurface after 10K km based on all these complaints.

This car should be listed as Do Not Buy.
I have a POS Kia Forte, it has been a good reliable car (knock on wood) for 5 years now unlike the civic. I got almost 75k km on it so far so good.

Went to the dealership. The mechanic told he had seen another customer with the same issue before me and took the car for a drive. He was immediately able to replicate the issue and said he will change the rack. Car is still in warranty so I think problem solved.

Took ours, 2022 Civic Sport (7000 miles), to the Honda dealer in Hilton Head. Explained the issue, they said leave the car. They called back within the hour. They identified the problem as a defective steering rack. Said the part will be 3-4 weeks. They did not want us to drive it. Gave us a loaner for the duration.
Same issue took to piedmont honda told me they had no idea how long till the get the steering rack replacement but they will call me and sent me on my way so im having to drive with this issue for who knows how long NOT SAFE!

I FINALLY got my car back. 110 days after dropping it off. Two commutes and it drives flawlessly.

If you're in the GTA and having problems getting a dealership to acknowledge your issue, take it to the folks at Markham Honda.

What exactly you told your dealership? And how bad was the steering? On my civic touring i’ve to put a little more effort than usual and it generally start to happen after i drive car for more than 10-15 min.

My '22 SI is now at 24,000 miles. The car's steering was doing the "sticking" behavior described in all of these forum threads. I drive long distance to work (Huntsville Alabama to Atlanta) several times a month. Recently the steering has returned to normal, no sticking at all for the last month or so.

If this is happening to you, be sure to file a complaint. This is the only way we'll be able to start a recall: Report a Safety Problem | NHTSA
You would think that if Honda knows the fix for this that they would want to beat a possible recall that could effect thousands of cars and have all the dealership service departments fix the cars that are exhibiting symptoms, which would be a much lower number.

Jimmy Trieu. He said they are aware of the issue and starting to see more complaints. Common theme seems to be people who use their civic for commuting. I was the first to report this issue at that dealership in Sept 22.
Super helpful, thanks.

Two dealerships in the GTA that I spoke with said I would have to pay a hefty diagnostic fee if they don't find anything wrong. They also said it was dealer policy to not do diagnostic drives on the highway, which is of course when the problem happens. They also seemed to play dumb that they hadn't seen the issue before.

Even though Markham Honda is about an hour away for me, I'd feel more comfortable dealing with someone who at least acknowledges that there's a historical issue with sticky steering wheels and so I'll likely make an appointment there.

Thanks again.
