22 Civic LX steering wheel sticking

22344 Views 154 Replies 49 Participants Last post by  Nosirrah
Just want to document/share an issue I've had recently. 14k miles Civic LX sedan.

The steering wheel sticks at times. Driving straight and in turns. It's a slight stick, but increasingly more noticeable.

While driving straight it happens if I don't touch the wheel for a few seconds. Then I'll need to make a minor correction and it's stuck. I have to put some decent pressure on the wheel to make it unstuck, which causes an over-correction. If i steadily make corrections it doesn't stick.

Same in a turn. If I am making a slow or wide turn, wheel stays in same position for a second, it doesn't just roll out of the turn easily. I have to force it to come out of the turn. Again once it's unstuck it feels fine. Leaving it in one position for more than a second or two initiates the stuck. I'll be taking it to dealer, but wondering if anyone else has a sticking steering system?

Mine is doing it really badly now also.. more after been driving it for awhile.. goes in on Dec.12th.. hopefully we dont get the run around
Please see my post one page back. Do not let them put it on the lift before they test drive your car. I don't understand the specifics but unloading the suspension causes the problem to go away for a day or two.

Honda has had my car since Nov 23rd to fix the problem, thankfully they rented me a car while the repair is being done. I've got my fingers crossed that I get it back before the end of the week. 2021 base kia forte != 2022 civic touring lol.
Just curious.. why so long.. are they waiting for parts?
They were waiting on the steering rack. It was supposed to be in on the 15th.

I just called and it doesn't look like I'll be getting it back before xmas, it's costing them almost $500 a week for the rental lol.

The faulty part is 53600-t21-a58

I would have told them i will keep driving my car until the new rack comes in..
IMHO a car experiencing this issue is not a safe highway commuter.
Yes.. u are right..mine is doing it too intermittently.. it definitely feels unsafe..i just hate leaving anything at a stealership

It sucks, because it's otherwise a nice car. Frankly I miss my 2019 cr-v touring. I never had a problem with that car, only had to do my maintenance.

My situation was a little different, I've been fighting with Honda over this since September and we were going into arbitration. It was obvious I was going to win because the dealership did not make a good faith effort to replicate the issue and their service advisor accidentally admitted to the issue in communications that I wasn't supposed to be cc'd on. When faced with the mountain of evidence Honda Canada asked to take the car for an extended test drive and here we are.

I'm in Canada, and I would suggest other Canadians experiencing this issue exhaust all options with the dealership first. I had a GPS logger in the car when they did the test drive so I could prove they only drove it for five minutes and the service order clearly said the problem started after approximately 30 minutes of highway driving. If the dealership will not put a good faith effort into replicating the problem, open a claim with camvap (camvap.ca). Keep track of everything, work orders, phone calls, etc. That will light a fire under their ass for sure. I'm not sure what the process is in the US, but I assume there's something similar.
Im in Canada as well.. mine started back in September also.. had an appt with the dealership but mine seems intermittent.. so i cancelled the appt and been hesitant to take it in until it does it constantly.. i will definitely be taking it in soon tho.. i commute 150 kms a day and when it acts up its so annoying i dont want to drive it

I completely sympathize. It's an awful feeling in bumper to bumper traffic and your steering is acting up. I'm also doing 150k a day, Burlington to Toronto via the QEW, 427 and 401 and I was experiencing the issue practically every commute.

I hope you get the issue sorted too.
Thanks.. keep in touch on here.. see how things go.. im the other way.. London to woodstock and back
Lol I was born and bred in London, Huron Heights area, small world!

I'll post an update once I get my car back.
Haha.. me as well.. east end!
anyone get the rack replaced and have any sucess, i called my service advisor and told him the car started again after 2 days leaving the dealer, have to make another appointment and won’t be turning my car off till the tech gets in, anyone in the US know if any consumer advocacy firms that will take something like this on, i’m not looking for a free or new car just want mine fixed/safe
Did u get your rack replaced?
no i’m still in the fighting to get them to acknowledge there is a problem phase
I was just at my dealership making my appt for Tuesday next week.. they said they know already there is a problem because they have had a few and said they have contacted Honda Corporate and that a TSB or Recall will likely be coming

that’s awesome! did they actually drive it or how did they diagnose the rack, info i think we all need so we can go armed into our dealers
Never drove it nope.. plugged in the scanner and said the torque sensor module or whatever was faulty and that it wasnt a replaceable unit so the whole rack will be replaced

Thats ok.. nope.. never did which surprised me that they said there were codes. … guess u can have some freeze frame codes that dont show up.. not really sure..service advisor said he honestly wasnt sure what the mechanic did..just told him it was faulty.. which made me happy that i didnt have to fight with them

Gonna add on my experience with this issue.. note that Honda Canada may be handling this differently than the US counterpart.

Also, I have not resolved it yet, I am still in the processes of getting this handled.

I started experiencing the sticky steering at 9,000 km. They took it for a test drive, called back and said they found nothing.
Here is the full statement from the service report..

Seems like they're doing their best to dodge having to deal with it until they know what it is for sure.. They told me they don't want to replace the steering rack because that could cost them ~$2,100 if the issue still persists afterwards.

Shop foreman said he's had three other cars with this issue but no resolve with any of them.

Currently waiting to hear back with a follow up. Thinking of leaving my car with them until this is sorted.
Weird.. where in Canada? I had no problem getting them to say kine was bad.. i’m currently just waiting for one to come in on order. Also.. funny they say no leaks.. seeing as its electric..
Got my steering rack replaced today under warranty and everything is great again.. had to wait a month and a half for the part to come in!
