First time poster here. I purchased a 2023 Sport Touring Hatchback in November (Boost Blue club ftw). It had not yet had an oil change up to this point, and I decided to do the first one myself at about 9000 miles, which I'm glad I did. When I drained the oil including what was in the filter, 5 quarts came out, which is over 1 quart above what the oil level is supposed to be for the 1.5L engine (picture below is directly from the owner's manual). I called the dealership I purchased from and they claim that the oil is pre-added by Honda before it gets shipped, which I'm not sure is true so if someone knows for sure my ears are open.

Should I be worried about damage to the engine? I haven't noticed any obvious performance issues or strange noises. I'm also not sure how much recourse I have since I did the change myself and there isn't any official documentation stating what the original oil level was.

My next step is to contact Honda customer service but I'm assuming that won't get me very far. If this was indeed the factory, maybe they made a mistake and filled the oil as if it was a 2.0L model.

After digging around a bit this sounds like it could be oil dilution, which has been known to occur on Honda's 1.5L turbos.
Did you smell any gasoline in the oil? I know it was a concern with the last generations, but I haven’t noticed anyone complaining about the 11th generation. My suggestion is to change the oil sooner, maybe at 4,000 or 5,000 miles.

Cars are filled at the factory, not the dealer. Probably some fuel dilution still exists. I would monitor this at the next oil change, and make those changes every 5000 miles. There are lots of reasons to not let the oil hang around longer, especially in a Direct Injected Turbo engine

The oil definitely smelled like gasoline. After this I will be closely monitoring the oil level and will be changing it in much shorter intervals.

Just curious, was the maintenance minder not complaining well before 9k miles? I was thinking of doing my first change at 3-4k and then every 5k thereafter since mine is also the turbocharged Sport Touring.
That sounds like a better interval anyway. The maintenance minder on mine when I change at 5k is still showing 50%, I've run oil to 10k in my old Prius but that also wasn't Direct Injected, or Turbocharged.

Also worth noting, all oil will smell like gasoline to some extent. I would avoid any panic for the time being and see where you stand next oil change since you know exactly how much you filled with this time.

When you change the oil (or perform any other maintenance for that matter) how do you reset the Maintenance Minder? Does it detect that automatically?

Five quarts yeah that's definitely over full. If you have any of that oil left. Save it send it off to Blackstone labs they'll send you a free kit. If there's dilution they'll find it through oil analysis cost like 20 some odd bucks I think. Would probably be worth doing analysis on your next oil change at the shorter interval also.

Actually, it's more like $35-40 now. Blackstone Labs analysis on oil dilution is, not particularly accurate due to the method used. Perhaps visit BITOG for suggestions about other Labs. In any case, changing oil, using a good synthetic every 4-5k is probably a better way to go than running constant UOA's. Just keep an eye on the stick for rising levels and be proactive. No engine was ever harmed by changing oil too early, many have been damaged by changing too late.

Yeah it seems everything's going up these days unfortunately.
