Hey guys,

Will be buying a set of winter tires for the first time for my 2022 civic sport sedan. I have a few questions that hopefully you guys can help to answer:

1. I'm thinking of buying General Tire Arctic Altimax 12 (215/55/r16) for 150 cad/tire. Anyone have experience with them? I was looking at Michelin X Ice and Blizzark W90 but they are a bit too expensive.

2. I want to buy some Steel wheels as well. Asked Honda dealer and they said the OEM wheels they provide is 16x7. I want to buy the rims from Costco as they are cheaper, however Costco only has 16x6.5 rims. Would the 215 tires fit ok on the 6.5 rims? or it would be a bit sloppy? I know the recommended rims width for 215 tires is between 6-7.5 but the Honda guy told me he wouldn't recommend below 7...

3. Is it worth it to store my all season tires at a storage service? Cost about 70 cad for a season (4-5 months). If I keep it in the garage, any tips/suggestions to avoid wheels melting and the heavy rubber smell?

Many thanks.

Try this site in Quebec - 4tires.ca - they have 10% off right now with the coupon code, and they usually have free shipping depending on where you live in Canada. There is also a $100 mail in rebate for Michelin X-ice, three forms of savings , it can add up nicely. See link below and explore their site. I buy my winter tires from them.

Any winter tire is good and better than any all season. I would steer you towards Micheline X-ice despite the added cost. They will last you twice as long as other winter tires, and they actually have a treadwear warranty, nothing else comes close to wear, so they are worth any added cost in the long term. I only run them on my cars, we get many dry days in our winter so tire wear accelerates in dry winter weather. There is a $100 mail in rebate in effect now. Something to consider.

I can't answer the rim question, check the owner's manual for wheel sizes. I bought my steel rims from Honda.

I don't believe paying others to store my tires. Tires don't melt, and I have never had a strong rubber smell, the smell will be long gone after the tires get some wear on them. If you don't have the room then consider it, I don't like paying for storage. Just my opinion.

Thank you for your opinion. I looked at Michelin X ice before but I just can't justify the extra $200 yet. Were you able to buy just the steel rims from Honda? I called them and they said I will need to purchase the tires to get the discounted price on the rims..

Yes I bought the rims on their own from my Honda dealer, I wasn't worried about price so much, I just wanted the rims and needed them installed on my Si. I suuplied my own tires. Winter rims were hard to find last year so I took what I could get from my dealer, I am sure you can get cheaper rims from other sources you noted.

The extra $200 for Michelin X-Ice will be easily recouped when they last twice as long. They are also very quiet tires, many winter tires are noisy and that gets irritating after some wear occurs. The $100 mail-in rebate will help too.

I've got Michelin X-ice on my Si and my Subaru WRX. The Subaru is real hard on tires, and I am getting good wear life on my WRX winter tires, very happy with both cars on these tires.

Just chiming in here on the tires. Don't cheap out. X Ice on my Si in Alberta. If you get snow and cold, don't cheap out. Get the best tires. 200$ is way cheaper than your deductible and collision headache and safety.
Thanks for the suggestion. I definitely will get a good set of tires with steel rims. DId you downsize your winter tires? If yes, is there a significant difference in terms of ride quality, grip and handling?

With winter tires you want them slightly more narrow than the summer sizing, narrow tires have more grip in winter. I went down to a 17 inch size, the softer sidewall keeps the ride from being harsh, handling is never as good but that's a given with all winter tires.

In my 2020 ex I downsized to a 15. In my 2022 Si I downsized to a 17. I would have gone smaller on the Si but the break rotors were too large. Zero noticeable difference in ride. Noise is lower as the winters are higher quality than the stock all seasons.

Hi, I am from Canada too! I have experience with X-ice Snow in a Lexus GS350. They are one of the best tires you can get. For my Civic, I got the Pirelli Sottozero 3, I didn't know too much about this tire before. I bought them because I found a slightly used set (3000km old) 235/40R18 for $750. It is the exact size for my Civic Sport Touring. And I am liking them so far. They have no problem with snow or ice. Much much better than the OEM all-season tires. I tried the OEM Continental all-season tires on snow and they did not perform well. I turned at 30 km/h and it understeered straight into neibourgh's driveway. I don't like the OEM Conti also because they generate high tire noise on the highway.
Also, for the rims, I heard steel rims are quite heavy and will rust over time. There are a few local aftermarket rims manufacturers in Canada that produce good quality and reasonably priced wheels. Such as OPE, FAST wheels, and Superspeed. 18-inch wheels are generally below $1000. Hope this information helps you.
Have a great day!
