I appreciate the collective wisdom of the forum.

I have identified a 2022 HB CVT in my area (in transit to the dealer) that I am considering buying. Did some initial email inquiries with the dealership (and even electronically went through the whole "let me talk to my manager" routine ) and was given a quote of:
MSRP - $30,810
Honda Protection Package (1999 value) - $995
Predelivery Service Charge - $799
Taxes, etc ...

The sales manager emailed that the Protection Package is "mandatory" and all vehicles sold require this. Does he mean all vehicles sold at that dealership? Or does he mean all Honda dealerships are required to add this to every car?

Did everyone here pay for this? Or was it optional.

Thank you,

Thank you for that. Sounded fishy.

Has anyone gotten this package? What's in it, and is it worth it?

Are most people paying MSRP + delivery/destination charges? Or should I be negotiating harder.

I got it for a similar price, mine included wheel locks, trunk liner, door edge and trunk bumper guards (color matched film basically), and splash guards. Of those, I only found value in the wheel locks really. The others are a solid "meh."

I paid sticker for mine and I work at the dealership. In this market there is no arguing when it comes to price and with inventory being so short they already have somebody lined up to the buy car you declined. It's crazy.

Does your dealership make the upgrades like the protection package mandatory?

I’d encourage you to have a conversation with the sales person. I think what the dealerships are doing is adding on a package to help them keep their doors open since they don’t have a steady inventory. I found the dealership was open to me choosing a package I preferred rather than the standard option they put on. I don’t care for the door edge guards, so I swapped for a different protection package.

Unfortunately in this market, the dealerships hold most of the cards because they have such low inventory they are able to sell to someone else if you refuse the terms.

It's not the dealer being fishy, it's the dealer trying to capitalize more in each vehicle since instead of selling hundreds, they're selling 12. Very unlikely they would give you "closer to invoice" like some other goofball suggested. I work for Honda, there isn't a lot of markup, just get the car, you'll be glad you did

I had a chance to buy an Si that was on the showroom floor and totally unmolested with 5 kms on the odometer. The sales guy held the car for me for two days and he put a sold sign on the car until I could get there to do a deal, just talking over the phone and without taking any money from me. I got the car at MSRP and I was able to drive it away with no wait. I paid about $500 in extra add-ons that included winter mats, and I got a $200 gift card that I used towards winter rims etc. They aren't getting many allocations of the Si models, this was their first one, and they don't know if any others are coming their way any time soon. They can't charge any mark-up and there is more demand than there is supply. The few hundred bucks I had to pay for extra add-ons is lunch money in the grand scheme of things, and at least I got something for the extra costs. I loved the car and I got it with no wait time, so nothing to complain about. No complaints with the dealer, they were very fair to deal with, and they went out of their way to work with me.

You have to understand their sales are way down and it is even worse today than it was when I got my car in December, it is really bad for them right now. They need to make a bit more money on each sale if they can't do the volumes they were used to in the past. Once the supply chain issues straighten up you might see incentives coming back and a willingness to deal more, but that is many months down the road. How could I resist this:

I just tried to buy a 2023 civic for my daughter. They tried this crap with me as well. I’m in Corpus Christi TX and will find an honest dealer somewhere else.

In Southern California, the protection package is $3,995!!! I was in shock. Thats quite a bit for wheel locks, Trunk tray and splash guards.
I live in Southern California, its not every dealer. Gotta shop around. A dealer that had the car I wanted marked up the package to around $3500, I found another local dealer that was adding the protection package at MSRP so I brought a print out of that pricing and showed it to the dealer and got them to price match everything.
